Qatar announces 26-man squad for World Cup qualifiers against UAE and North Korea

Doha, Qatar: Qatar has unveiled its 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, featuring a blend of experience and youth. Key players from the Asian Cup-winning team, including veterans like Assim Madibo and Karim Boudiaf, are making their return to the national side. Notably, Madibo is set to make his comeback after missing out on the Asian Cup squad earlier this year, while Boudiaf and Abdelrahman Moustafa are also returning after extended absences.

Qatar will first host the UAE on September 5 at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium, before traveling to Vietnam to face North Korea at the New Laos National Stadium on September 10. The squad includes standout performers from the U-23 side, which reached the quarterfinals of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, showcasing the promising future of Qatari football.

Veteran midfielder Akram Afif, the top scorer and MVP of the Asian Cup, is expected to lead the team as captain following the retirement of Hassan Al Haydos. Afif has already worn the armband in recent matches, signaling a new era for Qatar under the guidance of coach Marquez Lopez.

The squad selection reflects Qatar’s strategic approach to blend experienced players with emerging talent, ensuring a competitive edge as they aim to secure their place in the World Cup. With a mix of seasoned campaigners and rising stars, Qatar is poised for a strong showing in the crucial qualifiers.
