The
Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has delayed its verdict on Indian wrestler
Vinesh Phogat's appeal for a shared silver medal until Tuesday. Phogat's appeal
follows her disqualification from the Olympic 50 kg wrestling final after she
missed the weight by 100 grams, preventing her from competing against the USA's
Sarah Hildebrandt.
Initially,
CAS had planned to announce the decision by the end of the Olympics but has
extended the timeline to accommodate "exceptional circumstances,"
granting more time to sole arbitrator Annabelle Bennett. The disqualification
allowed Guzman Lopez to replace Phogat in the final, where Hildebrandt won gold
with a 3-0 victory.
On Thursday, Vinesh Phogat expressed her intention to retire from wrestling, citing the emotional toll of the disqualification. She announced her retirement on social media, ending her career that spanned from 2001 to 2024, saying, "My courage is broken, I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling, 2001-2024."
