Doha, Qatar: High jump legend Mutaz Barshim
remains as ambitious as ever, targeting his fourth world title at next year’s
World Championships in Japan after winning his historic fourth Olympic medal—a
bronze at the Paris Games. The Qatari superstar, who has now secured gold in
Tokyo 2020, silver in London 2012 and Rio 2016, and bronze in Paris 2024, is
the most decorated men's high jumper in Olympic history. Despite announcing
that Paris would be his final Olympics, Barshim hinted at a possible
participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Games, provided he is at peak fitness.
Barshim,
who made his first media appearance since returning from Paris at Katara’s
Chedi Hotel, expressed his satisfaction with his achievements but remains
driven to push further. He is focused on breaking the world record held by
Cuban Javier Sotomayor and achieving more milestones in the coming seasons.
Additionally, Barshim is looking forward to the World Championships and his own
“What Gravity Challenge,” while potentially participating in select Diamond
League events that align with his training goals.
Looking to the future, Barshim is keen to share his experience with the next generation of Qatari athletes. He expressed confidence in the talent and infrastructure in Qatar, highlighting the country's strong prospects post his retirement. He is particularly proud of the young team competing at the World Juniors, signaling a bright future for Qatari high jumpers.
