Tamil Nadu: The death toll from the hooch
tragedy in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu, has risen to 38, with over a hundred
individuals hospitalized. Amidst growing criticism, Chief Minister MK Stalin
announced the suspension of nine policemen, including those from the
prohibition wing. So far, four people involved in the sale of the toxic arrack
have been arrested.
On Thursday, 20 June, district
collector MS Prashanth confirmed the rising death toll, stating that 29 people
had died by morning, which increased to 38 by evening. Over 109 individuals are
receiving treatment, with the condition of many critically ill patients
constantly being updated. State Minister EV Velu reported that the victims
included two women and one transgender person.
To manage the crisis, medical professionals and specialists from nearby government medical colleges have been deployed, along with additional ambulances equipped with life-support. Special teams and senior health officials from Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Salem have been dispatched to Kallakurichi. Additionally, 18 patients have been transferred to Puducherry JIPMER Hospital and six to Salem government hospital for specialized care.
