India has secured its first-ever gold medal in the open section of the Chess Olympiad 2024, marking a historic moment in the nation's chess history. The Indian team, comprising young prodigies and seasoned players like Gukesh D, Praggnanandhaa R, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, Pentala Harikrishna, and team captain Srinath Narayanan, delivered an exceptional performance throughout the tournament.
The victory came when Arjun Erigaisi and D Gukesh clinched crucial wins in their matches, while China's second-placed team dropped points on two boards against the USA. India began the competition with a strong winning streak, triumphing in its first eight ties. Despite being held to a draw by reigning champions Uzbekistan, India managed to maintain its lead.
This win adds to India's chess accolades, following previous bronze medals in the 2022 edition, which was held on home soil, and in 2014. The team's remarkable journey in 2024 is a testament to India's rising dominance in global chess.
