Qatar‘s vegetable production surges by 98% over past five years

Doha, Qatar: Qatar has witnessed a remarkable surge in local food production over the last five years, attributed to the government's efforts aimed at enhancing self-sufficiency and ensuring food security in the nation.


During a recent address at the 36th meeting of the Agricultural Cooperation and Food Security Committee of GCC countries, Minister of Municipality HE Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah highlighted the impressive progress in food security achieved by Qatar. The country has experienced substantial growth in cultivated areas, quantity, and production, leading to a remarkable 98% increase in fresh vegetable production.


“Over the past five years, Qatar has achieved a production boom in terms of food security, represented by significant growth in cultivated areas, quantity and production, which contributed to increasing the volume of fresh vegetable production by about 98%,” said the Minister.

 

Minister Al Attiyah further emphasized that Qatar has attained self-sufficiency in the livestock production sector, with a notable achievement of 100% in fresh milk and its derivatives, as well as fresh poultry.


These advancements signify a pivotal milestone in Qatar's journey towards achieving food security goals and fostering sustainable agriculture practices, positioning the nation as a leading example in self-sufficiency and local food production.
