Olympic star Sifan Hassan opens up about her faith and success at Education City Speaker Series

Doha, Qatar: Olympic gold medalist Sifan Hassan shared her remarkable journey from Ethiopia to becoming a champion runner during a talk at Qatar Foundation's Education City Speaker Series. Hassan, who migrated to the Netherlands at 15, reflected on her challenges adjusting to a new culture and cold climate, eventually turning to running as a free outlet. The discussion covered key aspects of her journey, including training, recovery, faith, and future goals.

Hassan, who won three medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, described her early days in Ethiopia, where running was a part of everyday life. Despite her love for sleep, she often ran to school to avoid being late. Moving to the Netherlands was initially difficult, but running helped her find balance in her new life.

Known for excelling across different distances, Hassan has earned Olympic medals in the 1,500m, 5,000m, 10,000m, and marathon events. She explained that her curiosity and love for challenges motivate her to compete in such varied races, adding that she enjoys pushing herself beyond limits.

Hassan also spoke about the importance of her faith. She proudly wore a hijab to collect her gold medal in Paris, saying that Islam has guided her since moving to the Netherlands alone as a teenager. “I am Muslim. I am an Olympic champion,” she declared, celebrating her achievements and identity.
