Qatar's life expectancy reaches news high of 80.4 years : Health Minister

Doha, Qatar: Minister of Public Health H E Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari has reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to universal health coverage and the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Speaking at the summit titled “Closing the Gap in Universal Health Coverage and Health Financing for CVD” (cardiovascular disease), Dr. Al Kuwari highlighted the nation’s robust strategies and initiatives in the healthcare sector. She emphasized that these efforts have led to an increased life expectancy of 80.4 years in Qatar, reflecting significant advancements in healthcare services and infrastructure. However, she cautioned that the burden of cardiovascular diseases is rising due to unhealthy lifestyles, including obesity, low physical activity, and tobacco use.

Dr. Al Kuwari detailed several national health strategies aimed at promoting a healthier lifestyle among Qatar’s population. Notably, the establishment of National Sports Day by an Amiri decree in 2011 encourages physical activity as a daily practice. Additionally, Qatar has enhanced its public transportation system, created bicycle lanes, and built air-conditioned parks to facilitate exercise even during hot weather. A significant measure to combat cardiovascular risks is the introduction of indirect taxes on tobacco and unhealthy beverages, aimed at reducing consumption and encouraging healthier choices. These financial measures are supported by public health campaigns and the Healthy City programme, implemented in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

In her address, Dr. Al Kuwari also highlighted Qatar’s investment in modern healthcare infrastructure. The nation boasts a network of 31 primary healthcare centres under the Primary Health Care Corporation and four additional centres managed by the Qatar Red Crescent Society, ensuring comprehensive healthcare access. Specialized hospitals, such as the Heart Hospital, provide advanced cardiac care free of charge, regardless of nationality, demonstrating Qatar’s commitment to equitable healthcare. The minister called for intensified efforts at both national and global levels to address the root causes of cardiovascular diseases through enhanced cooperation, innovation, and evidence-based interventions, paving the way for a healthier future for all.
