Visitors with mandatory insurance can access HMC’s emergency medical treatment

Doha, Qatar: The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in Qatar has unveiled important details about emergency medical treatment and assistance available to visitors. The information aims to provide clarity on navigating the healthcare system in Qatar during times of need.

As per the details in an online leaflet released by HMC, visitors can now access emergency medical treatment at the facility, provided they have mandatory insurance. In a bid to ensure that all visitors receive top-notch healthcare services when necessary, Qatar rolled out the Mandatory Visitor Health Insurance Scheme in 2023.

Under this scheme, visitors are eligible for coverage of up to QR150,000 for emergency medical treatment. To qualify for coverage, the condition must be classified as a medical emergency. Visitors who are uncertain about their eligibility are encouraged to approach the insurance coordination team in the Emergency Department at HMC for guidance on the next steps.

If a visitor's condition meets the criteria for a medical emergency and the treatment costs surpass the covered amount, their private insurance may step in to cover the excess expenses based on their policy terms.

In cases where the condition does not qualify as a medical emergency, it will not be covered by Qatar's Mandatory Visitor Health Insurance Scheme. However, the visitor's private insurance policy may offer coverage for part or all of the treatment costs, depending on the specifics of their plan.

It is important to highlight that visitors whose insurance providers do not have an agreement with HMC must settle the treatment fees upfront and later seek reimbursement in line with their insurance policy. Conversely, if the visitor's insurance company is on HMC's approved list, the medical expenses will be billed directly to the insurer by HMC.
