Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian wins Iran’s presidential election

Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian has emerged victorious in Iran's presidential election, surpassing his opponent Saeed Jalili.

Dr. Pezeshkian secured 53.3% of the votes counted, whereas, Mr. Jalili's received 44.3%.

The run-off between the two candidates was necessitated by the absence of a clear majority in the initial round of voting on June 28th, a round marked by a notably low voter turnout of 40%.

This election followed the tragic helicopter crash in May that took the life of Iran's former president, Ebrahim Raisi, along with seven others, prompting the need for a new leader to be elected.
