Qatar to boost environmental sustainability, aim to declare 30% of land, marine areas as nature reserve by 2030

Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) is on a mission to designate 30 percent of Qatar's land and marine areas as nature reserves by 2030, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability.

In a recent interview with Qatar TV, Minister H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie revealed that currently, approximately 27 percent of the nation's land is protected as nature reserves, while less than two percent is allocated for marine reserves.

The strategic initiative aims to officially recognize both land and marine areas, ensuring their protection while allowing the public to enjoy these natural spaces responsibly. "Visitors to nature reserves are welcomed, provided they respect the guidelines in place to safeguard the flora and fauna," Al Subaie stated, emphasizing the importance of adhering to rules that prevent harmful activities.

The minister highlighted the positive trend of increasing natural reserves in Qatar, which not only enhances biodiversity but also promotes eco-tourism. "Nature reserves are gaining popularity as tourist attractions worldwide, and Qatar's unique environmental sites, from the Al Reem Natural Reserve to the mangrove forests on Bin Ghannam Island, play a crucial role in boosting the nation's tourism sector," he added.

With a commitment to sustainable tourism, Qatar is dedicated to preserving its rich ecosystems through innovative conservation practices, ensuring a balance between nature and tourism.
