Nicaragua has declared its intention to break off diplomatic relations with Israel due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
President Daniel Ortega, known for his staunch criticism of Israel's military actions against the Palestinian group Hamas, has ordered the termination of ties, citing the Israeli government as "fascist and genocidal." Vice President Rosario Murillo, who is also Ortega's wife, confirmed this decision.
It is noteworthy that this move is largely symbolic, given the minimal existing diplomatic relations between Israel and Nicaragua.
Currently, Israel does not maintain an ambassadorial presence in the Nicaraguan capital, Managua. This is not the first instance of Nicaragua breaking off diplomatic relations with Israel; similar actions were taken in 2010 under President Ortega's leadership and in 1982 under the Sandinista revolutionary government, which was also led by Ortega following the country's 1979 revolution.
