Doha,
Qatar: Lulu Hypermarket, one of Qatar's leading retail chains, has reaffirmed
its commitment to sustainability by actively participating in Qatar
Sustainability Week 2024. The event, held from September 28 to October 5, was
organized by the Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future, in partnership with
the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
As a
strategic partner of Earthna, Lulu Hypermarket showcased its efforts to protect
the environment, reduce carbon emissions, and minimize food waste. Among its
key initiatives, Lulu has installed reverse vending machines in 19 stores,
encouraging customers to recycle plastic bottles, with plans to add more
machines by the end of the year. The hypermarket also promoted reusable bags
and eco-friendly products by offering special deals during the week.
Lulu’s
Al Meshaf store became the first carbon-neutral hypermarket in the GCC, a
significant achievement that highlights its leadership in sustainability. The
retailer has also introduced e-waste collection bins in collaboration with
Seashore Sustainability, launched Qatar’s largest Zero Waste Refill Zone at its
Abu Sidra branch, and implemented energy-saving zones to promote eco-friendly
products.
In
addition, Lulu Hypermarket is trialing an innovative food waste recycling technology
at its Bin Mahmoud store and continues to partner with the Ellen MacArthur
Foundation to support the global transition to a circular economy. The Al
Messila branch has also earned the prestigious Global Sustainability Assessment
System (GSAS) certification with a ‘Gold’ rating.
These
efforts align with Qatar National Vision 2030, focusing on reducing carbon
emissions, cutting food waste, and encouraging eco-conscious consumer choices.
As part of its ongoing sustainability journey, Lulu remains committed to
creating an environmentally friendly shopping experience for all.
Through initiatives like these, Lulu Hypermarket continues to lead the way in promoting sustainable practices in Qatar.
