New Delhi: Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s former Prime Minister and a key architect of its economic reforms, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Singh, who was ailing for some time, breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, as reported by local media. He served as India’s Prime Minister for two terms from 2004 to 2014 and is remembered for his integrity, intellect, and transformative economic policies.
A distinguished economist-turned-politician, Dr. Singh played a pivotal role in shaping India’s modern economy. As Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, he introduced landmark economic liberalization reforms that opened India’s doors to global trade and investment. These measures rescued the country from a severe financial crisis and propelled it toward rapid growth. His tenure as Prime Minister saw significant milestones, including the India-U.S. civil nuclear deal and various welfare schemes.
Dr. Singh’s remarkable journey included serving as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and holding prestigious roles in international organizations like the International Monetary Fund. Despite facing political challenges during his tenure, he remained respected for his calm demeanor and steadfast leadership. Political leaders across party lines and global dignitaries have paid glowing tributes to Singh, acknowledging his invaluable contributions to the nation.
The nation mourns the loss of one of its most respected statesmen. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among others, offered condolences, highlighting Dr. Singh’s pivotal role in India’s progress. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but his legacy as a reformist leader and dedicated public servant will endure in the annals of Indian history.
