Qatar urges pregnant women to get flu vaccine ahead of flu season

Doha, Qatar: With flu season approaching, healthcare professionals in Qatar are emphasizing the importance of the flu vaccine for pregnant women. The flu virus can lead to severe complications for both expectant mothers and their unborn babies, making vaccination an essential preventive step.

"The flu can cause serious complications in pregnant women, such as pneumonia, hospitalization, and even premature birth," said Dr. Huda Abdulla Al Saleh, Senior Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Executive Director of Quality and Safety at Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Women’s Wellness and Research Center. "Vaccination helps protect both mother and baby from these potential dangers."

The flu vaccine, deemed safe for all stages of pregnancy, strengthens immunity and lowers the risk of infection for both mother and newborn. Dr. Al Saleh further stated, "The ideal time for vaccination is before the flu season intensifies, providing protection throughout the season." She also noted that the vaccine’s safety in pregnancy has been confirmed through extensive research worldwide.

Flu vaccinations are available at all Primary Health Care Centers, private clinics, and during outpatient appointments at HMC facilities. Pregnant women can easily book appointments by calling PHCC at 107, visiting a private clinic, or requesting the vaccine during a scheduled HMC OPD appointment.
