MoPH advises public to stay vigilant against winter respiratory viruses

Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in Qatar, alongside Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), is urging residents to take proactive measures against seasonal influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as the winter season begins. Dr. Hamad Al Romaihi, Director of the Health Protection and Communicable Diseases Control Department at MoPH, highlighted the increased risk of respiratory infections during cooler months and emphasized the importance of preventive actions. Vulnerable groups, including individuals aged 50 and above, children under five, pregnant women, and those with chronic medical conditions, are particularly urged to take precautions.

Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal, Head of the Infectious Diseases Division at HMC, outlined essential preventive measures to curb the spread of these viruses. These include maintaining good hygiene, frequent handwashing, covering one’s mouth while coughing or sneezing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and getting vaccinated. Vaccines for both influenza and RSV are now widely available across Qatar, including at PHCC health centers, HMC outpatient clinics, and private healthcare facilities. Dr. Khal stressed the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines, urging high-risk individuals to wear masks in crowded places and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves.

Vaccination is free for all residents at over 90 healthcare facilities across Qatar, ensuring accessibility to all. Dr. Khalid Hamid Elawad, Manager of Health Protection at PHCC, emphasized the role of vaccination in safeguarding not only individuals but also families and the broader community. With vaccines available at numerous public and private healthcare locations, residents are encouraged to prioritize their health and contribute to the collective effort to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses this winter season.
