Doha, Qatar: A senior health official is urging citizens and their families to prioritize the annual flu vaccination, as the cold season arriving.
The free flu vaccine is available at over 90 government, semi-government, and private healthcare facilities nationwide, providing essential protection against the influenza virus, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Dr. Hanadi Khamis Al Hamad, Deputy Chief for Long Term Care, Rehabilitation and Geriatric Care, and Medical Director at Rumailah Hospital and Qatar Rehabilitation Institute, highlighted the severe consequences the flu can pose for older adults, often resulting in hospitalization or even death.
"The flu shot is a simple and effective way to protect our senior citizens from the serious complications of influenza," Dr. Al Hamad stated. "It's particularly crucial for older adults with underlying health conditions, as they are more susceptible to severe illness."
Research has shown that the flu vaccine significantly reduces the risk of flu-related illness, hospitalization, and death among older adults by bolstering the immune system's ability to combat the virus and mitigate symptom severity.
At Hamad Medical Corporation, patients are encouraged to request their flu vaccine during scheduled outpatient appointments. The vaccine is also available at all Primary Health Care Centers and various private clinics throughout Qatar.
Dr. Al Hamad emphasized that protecting senior citizens is a collective responsibility. ""By getting the flu shot, individuals are not only protecting themselves but also contributing to a healthier community. Encourage your loved ones to prioritize vaccination and help them access the necessary healthcare services," she added.
